Avatar X-Prize Demo Day

Avatar Carbon Removal teams competing in the Elon Musk XPRIZE are preparing to pitch their technologies on Avatar’s Demo Day, Thursday April 14th, 2022. Groups will present to a panel of investors and subject matter experts to seek funding for their ventures.

Avatar Innovations is proud to welcome a panel of Venture Capitalists from Longbow Capital, NGP Energy Capital, Counteract Partners, Evok Innovations, Climate Innovation Capital, Active Impact Investments, Pillar Four Capital and Thin Air Labs. Avatar wants to thank their Corporate sponsors, Suncor, Imperial, Cenovus, Shell, and Enbridge, who guided and advised these teams through their 6-month journey with us. We also want to thank our partner, The University of Calgary (and Innovate Calgary) for their outstanding contribution to this Accelerator. Finally, we are also pleased to welcome our ecosystem partners Creative Destruction Lab and Modern West Advisory to the presentations.

Following Climeworks’ raise of a record $650MM in capital for its carbon removal DAC technology, and NASDAQ adding three new price indexes to track the price of carbon removal, it is clear that removal of Carbon from the atmosphere is now entering the main stage and is promising immense growth and opportunity as the world continues to find ways to address its GHG emissions. Avatar’s Carbon Removal teams are keen on securing investment and growing their carbon capture and storage businesses. These seven teams from across the globe will showcase their concepts and key aspects of their technology.

These teams are:

  • AirTerra: Using pyrolysis to sequester carbon in biochar and sell as an animal bedding ingredient among other revenue streams.

  • The Blue Carbon Factory: Using artificial light to capture carbon in giant kelp and sequester it at the bottom of the ocean.

  • Carbon Cantonne: Using a novel chemical looping process to convert captured carbon dioxide to graphite and recycled heat.

  • CauseAlgea: Using synthetic biology to engineer a super strain of microalgae which will create a number of saleable carbon sequestration by-products.

  • Hydrogenate: Sequestering atmospheric carbon dioxide into a new carbon-negative manufacturing material using pyrolysis.

  • Undesert: Planting commercial forests in the desert and using solar powered desalination technology to treat produced wastewater.

  • ZS2: A construction materials company developing magnesium sulfate and magnesium carbonate-based cement alternatives that sequester carbon dioxide.

We wish them all the best of success on this important milestone for their businesses.

The following week, we will also be hearing from XPRIZE on their announcement regarding the 15 $1MM Milestone prizes. We wish our teams good luck!
